Chef Neftali Ponce demonstrated supremacy in the culinary arts, becoming the winner of the 6th edition of the “Taste of Peñasco – Iron Chef” competition. Funds raised at the event will be distributed equally among the Fire Department, Santa Claus Club, and the hemodialysis project of the Municipal DIF.
La Plaza del Camarón was the setting for the competition, which included the participation of 5 chefs: Juan Caballero from Mare Blu, Mickey Medina of Chef, Ramón Ramos and Eliseo Lozano from La Cocina de Ramón, René Acosta from Don Julio, and Neftali Ponce from the Mayan Palace.
With a tremendous amount of North American (US and Canadian) visitors on hand, along with local residents from across the spectrum of the city, competition got underway when Taste organizer Rosie Glover revealed the secret ingredient – Coffee.
Participants received flounder, chicken, shrimp, and a wide array of vegetables, legumes, and fruit to elaborate and decorate their exotic creations within the kitchen coliseum, which was divided into 5 stands. Chefs were given specific time limits for the preparation of each dish (appetizer: 15 minutes, entrée: 30 minutes, dessert: 15 minutes).
The chefs and their assistants quickly set about combining traditional cooking ingredients from the port with a delicious mixture of spices and aromatic herbs. Using original preparation methods the chefs successfully met contest goals.
The judging panel, made up of Chef Gustavo Gutiérrez from Las Palomas, Patrick Kemmache, Chef Aaron May (chef and proprietor of several restaurants in Tucson and Phoenix/Scottsdale area), Chef Adrian Siqueiros of Hermosillo, and T.O.P. Chef judge raffle winner Brian Landreville, have renowned experience in the culinary arts and had the difficult task of tasting each of the competing chefs’ plates, and scoring them on aspects of presentation, taste, and originality.
While the judges analyzed results, the public took advantage of the opportunity to sample from the “Taste of Peñasco,” taking place simultaneously on the plaza, and to purchase items from the 32 stands (among these restaurants, art, and services).
Puerto Peñasco First Lady Rafaela Félix de Figueroa, along with DIF Director Samuel Ortega Castro, announced the names of the winners. Second place of the 2013 T.O.P. Chef event went to Juan Caballero of the restaurant Mare Blu.

Gana Neftalí Ponce la sexta edición de “Top Chef”
PUERTO PEÑASCO, 16 FEBRERO 2013,- El Chef Neftalí Ponce demostró la supremacía en el arte culinario al resultar ganador de la sexta edición del concurso “Top Chef”, cuyos fondos obtenidos serán distribuidos en formas iguales entre el sistema DIF municipal, Bomberos y Santa Claus Club.
La plaza del camarón fue la sede de la competencia en la cual participaron 5 chefs: Juan Caballero del Restaurant Mare Blu; Mickey Medina de Chef; Eliseo Lozano de la Cocina de Ramón, René Acosta, del Restaurant Don Julio y Neftalí Ponce del Hotel Mayan Palace.
Ante la presencia de un número importante de turistas norteamericanos y canadienses, además de habitantes de diferentes sectores de la ciudad, la contienda arrancó cuando la organizadora Rosy Glover dio a conocer el ingrediente secreto. Café.
Los exponentes de la cocina recibieron para realizar sus platillos filete de lenguado, pollo, camarón y una extensa variedad de verduras, legumbres, frutas para elaborar y decorar sus exóticas creaciones en el coliseo de cocina divididos en 5 stands con 15 minutos para prepararlos.
De manera rápida los chefs y su auxiliar combinaron ingredientes tradicionales de la cocina de este puerto con una deliciosa mezcla de especias, hierbas aromáticas con originales métodos de preparación los chefs cumplieron con las expectativas del concurso.
El jurado integrado por Gustavo Gutiérrez, Patrick Kammache, Aarón May, Adrián Siqueiros y Brian Landreville, cuentan con una reconocida experiencia en este arte y tuvieron la difícil labor al degustar los diferentes platillos calificando aspectos como presentación, sabor y originalidad.
Mientras el jurado analizaba el resultado, el público asistente aprovecharon la oportunidad para degustar la muestra gastronómica “taste of Peñasco” realizada de manera simultánea en los alrededores de la plaza y adquirir diversos artículos de los 32 espacios.
La Primera Dama señora Rafaela Félix de Figueroa y el director de DIF, Samuel Ortega Castro, dieron a conocer los nombres de los ganadores, cuyo segundo lugar fuera para Juan Caballero del Restaurant Mare Blu.
