It’s U.S. Memorial Day Weekend, and the beginning of Marina Fest in Puerto Peñasco! In addition to high expectations outlined by the local Convention and Visitors Bureau, just in chats around town we know that many rental agencies and hotels are already booked up! Needless to say, there’s lots going on! Let’s rundown the weekend!

59th Annual Fishing Derby – Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club (Final Phase)  Fish Fry & Awards May 25    The final phase of the CBSC’s annual fishing derby will wind up this weekend with a Fish Fry scheduled for the 25th.  Fun Fact – The first Annual Fishing Derby in Cholla Bay took place in 1956 and had over 400 entrants! At the 50th annual tournament, the turnout was phenomenal…so if you’re not in the fishing derby this year let’s all be sure to make the CBSC’s 60th a blast in 2015!!  Check them out on Facebook and/or catch their Cholla Chatter by dropping a line to ChollaCBSC@gmail.com

May 24 – Expo Banacora 2014 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.   The evening is to feature a Mexican style arts market, free bacanora tastings (that’s the agave spirit of Sonora), mariachi, baile folklorico, the incredible talent of Alexis Montoya (winner of La Academia 2012 [similar to American Idol]) and more!  The evening also marks the official inauguration of the Bacanora Grill near the docks! May 25th Mark Mulligan – Trop Rock night at Caribbean Parrot with Mark Mulligan is back in town and is sure to once again fill up the welcoming, relaxing space at the Caribbean Parrot on Ave. Sinaloa (on the way to Mirador, about 2 blocks past Capone’s).  Opening groups start at 4 p.m., donations requested as entry that will go to local Puerto Peñasco charity group. Save a hammock and a margarita for me, Mark!

June 3rd– A very special CineMartes – Tuesday Film night with the showing of Pedro Ultreras’ documentary “ABC NUNCA MAS” (ABC Never Again), now on the 5th anniversary of this tragic fire at the ABC daycare in Hermosillo, Sonora.

June 5 – Music Academy “New Horizons” concert   7 p.m.  Quinta Ventura

June 7 – San Peregrino fundraising breakfast 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at Las Palomas Convention Center  120 pesos –  San Peregrino is a local organization seeking to provide counseling, economic, spiritual, and logistic support to individuals combatting cancer. One of their goals is to build a hospice center in Puerto Peñasco.
