Los Rolling Rockies, Puerto Peñasco’s own wheelchair basketball crew, recently came home with a triumphant victory! Upon their return, the team gathered at the Municipal Gym with their trophy in hand, and donning individual medals for their second place finish at the Sonoran League tournament held in Caborca on April 6th & 7th, after wrapping up with a 4-2 record.

Francisco Bercovich, team spokesperson, explained this was the second gathering of the Sonoran League (those registered with the Federation). The Sonoran League is divided among registered teams that at this point include 7 cities across the state: Nogales, Caborca, Hermosillo (with two teams), Cd. Obregón, Navojoa, and Puerto Peñasco.

The first tournament was held in Hermosillo, while the second was in Caborca (where Los Rolling Rockies took home 2nd place). Next month the tournament goes to Navojoa and in June Los Rolling Rockies will host all the teams here in Puerto Peñasco.

The objective of these tournaments is to select the team that will represent Sonora at the National Wheelchair Basketball level.

“What we want,” expresses Francisco, “is that everyone who reads about us and follows us sees that we are doing something different and better with each tournament. We are rising in rank, we continue to win more games and at least differential points.”

He stressed the support the team has received from the Municipal DIF, such as through the Sports Institute that has always supported them. He also thanked Florencio González, the team’s trainer, who has been giving his all since his arrival and has been boosting Los Rockies via all the experience he had from playing in Nogales and Phoenix. Now that there’s a local team he finds himself on the home court of Los Rolling Rockies.

According to Francisco, the team to beat now is Nogales. “We’re good friends, but that is the only team in the league we haven’t been able to beat. Of course we keep getting closer; they used to beat us by a lot on the scoreboard and now when we face each other there is only a difference of 6 points or so, and last time it was 5… So, it can happen. If we keep on, who knows, maybe some day we’ll tie and then we’ll beat them.”

“Obviously, we hope we’ll take first place in Nogales, that we’ll be unstoppable by the time the tournament gets here in June, and that Los Rolling Rockies will be able to represent Sonora, and of course Puerto Peñasco, at nationals.”
It’s important to point out that Los Rolling Rockies are receiving donations and holding fundraising events to help with costs for meals and hotels for June, in order to receive the other teams at the level they deserve. Everyone is invited to help Los Rolling Rockies meet this goal, and we hope they represent Puerto Peñasco with their heads held high.

Team Practice is held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:00PM to 6:00PM and Sundays from 3:00PM to 6:00PM at the Gimnasio Municipal (Municipal Gym) on Bonito Juarez across the street from CoffeePoint. You can find the Rolling Rockies on Facebook, or check out their site: www.RollingRockies.org.

¡Felicidades a Los Rolling Rockies!
