This time last year Puerto Peñasco’s wheelchair basketball team, Los Rolling Rockies, were preparing for their very first tournament. This weekend, Los Rolling Rockies will be hosting the Sonoran League Basketball Tournament here at home! Games begin Saturday, June 29th, 9 a.m. at the Municipal Gym along Blvd. Benito Juarez and go through Sunday, June 30th. Francisco Bercovich, (bilingual) team spokesperson, explains participating teams will be coming in from Nogales, Caborca, Hermosillo, Cd. Obregón, Navojoa, and of course Puerto Peñasco.
“People should know the games are free, the first games start at 9 and the inauguration is at noon (on Saturday),” Bercovich adds.
“Donations are of course welcome,” chips in Mark Olszewski, honorary Rolling Rocky and one of the team’s most fervent supporters.
In addition to basketball, along with raising awareness and support for the disabled community, the team itself has their eyes set on raising funds for their own van. Up to this point, the team has received varied forms of transportation support from the Municipal Sports Institute, DIF, and numerous individuals.
Francisco explains, “We’re working right now on getting our own van. We’re not talking about a new unit, but one that works and can take us to Navajoa or Cd. Obregon, etc. So, we are raising money for that.”
To be safe, the team has set their fundraising goal relatively high at about $10,000 US and note they’re about halfway there. In addition to promoting Los Rolling Rockies basketball, members from the team actively support disability awareness campaigns and help local youth with disabilities participate in Paralympic games at a State level.

Los Rolling Rockies recibirá a los equipos de la Liga Sonora en casa

Hace un año, más o menos por estas fechas, el equipo local de basketball en silla de ruedas “Los Rolling Rockies” estaban preparandose para su primer torneo. Este fin de semana el equipo recibirá a los equipos de Nogales, Caborca, Hermosillo, Cd. Obregón, y Navojoa para un torneo de la Liga Sonora, los días 29 y 30 de junio. Los juegos empezarán a las 9 a.m. y la inauguración oficial será a las 12 p.m. en el Gimnasio Municipal.
Francisco Bercovich, basketbolista y ocasionalmente vocero del equipo, nos comenta es importante que la gente sepa que los juegos son gratis, aunque las donaciones siempre son bienvenidas.
El equipo pretende conseguir su propio “van” y por lo tanto realizan actividades para recaudar fondos. “Estamos trabajando en conseguir nuestro propio van,” explica Bercovich, “No necesariamente una unidad nueva sino una que funciona y que nos puede llevar a los torneos en Navajoa, Cd. Obregón, etc.”
El equipo tiene el objetivo de recaudar hasta $10,000 USD, meta a la cual ya llevan la mitad. Es importante mencionar que aparte de mostrar su talento en la cancha de basket, varios miembros del equipo son activos en campañas de concientización así en apoyar a jóvenes con disabilidades para que participan en los juegos paralímpicos.
