These guys play hard.”

As tournament host, the Rockies provide room and board for 7 teams and are always welcome to new sponsors. Francisco explains, “…we do more than basketball, we are taking some kids to State level Paralympic competition in Hermosillo next week. We need to cover their cost too.” Roger Clyne’s Mexican Moonshine Tequila is the latest sponsor of Los Rolling Rockies! “They’re pretty enthusiastic about us (and the Rockies about them!)” says Mark Olsewzski, Rolling Rockies co-founder, honorary team member, “waterboy and head cheerleader”.  “Roger was wearing a Rolling Rockies hat at one of his own soccer events recently.”

Another figure who has been with the Rolling Rockies from the start and made them a tough team to beat is coach Florencio Gonzalez. A life-long athlete, Florencio has been a wheelchair basketball player for 11 years.

“After the accident, doctors told me I could not play anything. I took a bus to Glendale Community College, where they had a [wheelchair basketball] program. That was my start. Then I was accepted at Nogales, where I won my first championship. With just one year of training, we took second place in Mexico.” Florencio now divides his time between coaching the Rolling Rockies and playing for the Banner Suns, the phoenix Suns wheelchair team.

Is it difficult to be a player and a coach? “It’s fast, so it’s tough” says Florencio. “Ten percent is physical, the other ninety is mental.”

After taking 2nd place last year, Los Rolling Rockies will host the season opener for the Sonoran wheelchair basketball league this weekend (March 1st & 2nd), 9 am to 10 pm Saturday, and 10 am to 4 pm Sunday at the Municipal Gymnasium.* Mark tells me “It’s the most action you’ll see in town on a Saturday for this price…free.”

*With road construction on Blvd. Juarez, one of the best ways to get to the gym is from the back along Ave. Sobarzo (north side of Mariposa community)
