It’s all about the music – Weekend Rundown 10/11 – 10/13

If ever there were a time to long for a bar down in Mexico, as Mark Mulligan’s lyrics foretell, this is the weekend to be in Rocky Point! Good times, good music – here is our Weekend Rundown:

mark-mulligan It's all about the music - Weekend Rundown 10/11 - 10/13The tunes begin on Friday evening, 7 p.m. at Mexico Beach Bum in the Old Port with Mark Mulligan’s “trop rock” style of easy flowing guitar and lyrics, served up with a margarita. Housed under the towering palapa just across from the malecón, Mexico Beach Bum   is a new casual eatery in town, offering up “A way of life” in a laid back atmosphere with fantastic views over the sea. Mark is in town for the spot’s Grand Opening and, while the show is free, donations will be given to a selected charity. Plan to get there early and pick out a spot.

black-carl-630x418 It's all about the music - Weekend Rundown 10/11 - 10/13At 8 p.m., also on Friday, the music continues over on the bay – Cholla Bay to be exact, with Jason Boots and Black Carl at JJ’s Cantina – tickets are just $5 US at the door.  Jason Boots is a popular part of the Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers crew that light up the beach with Circus Mexicus each summer, and Black Carl is an indie, funk rock group out of Tempe bringing their sultry sounds to the sea. Promoters share, “Black Carl’s original “Desert Funk” music style is infectious. Recently they’ve sold out shows in Phoenix at the Crescent Ballroom and Rhythm Room. The band is talented and brings the funk, but Emma Pew’s voice delivers raw power not many singers dare to create.”

RC-PH-Oct-012-413x620 It's all about the music - Weekend Rundown 10/11 - 10/13The music goes on at another watering hole on Saturday with Black Carl opening up for Roger Clyne and PH Naffah’s SOLD OUT acoustic duo performance at Wrecked by the Reef with music beginning at 8 p.m.

Looking for local musicians – check out The Sound Sets jazz at the Lighthouse Thurs. and Fri. evenings, RiBand at the Lighthouse on Saturdays, Agua de Coco at Caribbean Bay Saturdays and La Merca at Elixir on Saturdays starting at 10 p.m.

Earlier on Saturday, Oct. 13th, at 7 a.m., La Roca JC and Exodo Bike Workshop invite people out for a bike race starting from the traffic circle at the end of Blvd. Samuel Ocaña (on the way to the Sandy Beach Resorts) for a ride to Cholla Bay. Men’s and Women’s categories with prizes to first three places. Registration is 1 bag of Carnation Clavel milk, to be donated to Casa Hogar Esperanza para los Niños.  *As a side note, Esperanza para los Niños is also PH Naffah’s selected group in town.

If you look out past Playa Bonita this weekend, you’ll be sure to catch the colorful sails of Arizona Multihull Fleet 24, along with the Tucson catamaran sailing fleet, holding their annual Fall Rocky Point Challenge.

regatta-03-620x413 It's all about the music - Weekend Rundown 10/11 - 10/13The weather is perfect these days, as October tends to be, so it’s also a great time to check out some of the other activities around town: SUP (stand-up paddle boards) in front of Playa Bonita, golfing at one of the three pristine golf courses, jet-skis, sunset cruises, and we see that parasailing seems to be making a comeback. If your travels extend through early next week, CEDO is also offering NaturArte ecotours throughout the week with kayaking, a trip to an oyster farm, or discovering area tidepools.

In movie news, don’t forget www.citicinemas.com  Elige una ciudad – Puerto Peñasco  Todos los complejos – Puerto Peñasco to see what’s playing at the theater in town on the way to the Old Port (Dob – dubbed in Spanish, Sub – subtitles in Spanish). Speaking of movies, next week there will be a documentary film fest at the Superior Technological Institute of Puerto Peñasco, with international films starting daily at 11 a.m. Free.

Other fun things this weekend: On Friday evening, starting at 6 p.m. the latest dance fitness movement ‘Brassilva’ will be taking over Quinta Ventura Salon with live music from Agua de Coco (adults $100 pesos, children $60) – tickets are also available now at Coffee Point. Yoga, dance, Zumba, cycling, pilates, golf, and more – yep, they’ve all made it to Puerto Peñasco so even though life may be a beach, it’s not all about the beach.
