Girls’ Soccer Tourney coming to Town

As Puerto Peñasco is where many sports “ladders” begin, as well as in bringing a form of entertainment to young girls and women preparing to compete in State Olympic games, from Nov. 4th-6th Puerto Peñasco will be host to 28 women’s soccer teams in 5 different categories.

Marisol Cruz Leyva, tournament coordinator, indicates this is the event’s third edition, bringing together children, teens, and adults from cities such as Sonoyta, San Luis, Nogales, Caborca, Tijuana, Mexicali, San Felipe, Tecate, Ensenada, and of course Puerto Peñasco.

She emphasizes the goal of the competition is to motivate and train young soccer players readying themselves for the State selection games to be held later in November.

She detailed the tournament categories include groups for girls: 10-11, 12-13, 14-15, sub-17, sub-20, as well as a free category for adults.  Games will be held on soccer fields of La Milla, as well as the “Ovalo” and Cárcamo” athletic fields.

After Puerto Peñasco, the tournament “ladder” continues north to cities such as Mexicali, Ensenada, and Tijuana, ensuring the young athletes can practice soccer throughout the year.

She added the tournament has received support from the “Youth Sports Foundation” of Rick Busa, who has offered to help provide equipment for the Puerto Peñasco squad. It’s worth noting the YSF also puts on an annual baseball clinic each January, featuring former professional baseball players.
