fotoSeptiembre ~ Photography month

fotosep-inaug-413x620 fotoSeptiembre ~ Photography month Just as in other spots across the country, on Friday, Aug. 31st, Sonora launched its 2012 FotoSeptiembre Festival. The event began with prizes awarded for the State Creative Photography Contest and included winners Alfredo Káram of Hermosillo, for his work “CONAGUA,” and Luis Mercado from Cd. Obregón for his piece entitled “Outcasts.” However, the State Digital Photography Contest still remains. Now, in its eighth year, this contest will conclude on Sept. 21st and winners will be made known seven days later. Prizes consist of digital cameras, so those who are interested shouldn’t pass up this opportunity.

In addition to being a good stage for photographers to make a name for themselves through exhibitions in different spots, this Festival is also to draw the general public closer to this art form. The Festival is complemented with workshops both for children and adults in participating cities, which in Sonora includes Hermosillo, Cajeme, Guaymas and Alamos. These will continue through September 30th.

Yet what is the Fotoseptiembre Festival? The Image Center on the CONACULTA (National Board of Culture and the Arts) site explains: “As of 1993, one of the most important icons of photography in Mexico is FotoSeptiembre, continuing a model whose permanence and viability are based on collaboration from the community of photographers and artists, (and) society and cultural institutions – both national and international – who since the first festival have enthusiastically heeded the call of the National Board of Culture and the Arts, through the Image Center, to take part biannually in the largest celebration of photography in Latin America.”

The Image Center lists Fotoseptiembre as one of its most important action strategies; hence, this festival is held throughout the entire country, and serves as a foundation for the projection of participating artists on the national and international scene. The levels of participation and the effects of this project, which includes both young students and photographers with long backgrounds, or from cultural spaces in small cities in the center of the country to widely known museums in Mexico’s main cities, means that Fotoseptiembre may be thought of as a model synchronizing the rhythm that has changed the country over the past two decades.

We hope to soon see the photographic talents of the Puerto Peñasco community spilling over from exhibition halls.
