The cultural sphere of Puerto Peñasco is continuing to grow and thrive. There’s a wealth of talent coming from both the Mexican and American (foreign) community living here, and those who have taken their talents beyond our shores. Last year’s first Film Workshop, organized by the Primera Toma (First Take) Film Club, did much to spark an interest among many local art enthusiasts for filmmaking and the magic of the silver screen. This February 15th, we at RockyPoint 360 are proud to fan this cultural fire within area youth and present film director Alex Rivera (NY, 1973) to screen his film Sleep Dealer (2008) here in Puerto Peñasco in an event open to the public and to be held at CitiCinemas. This could not be possible without the valuable encouragement and enthusiasm of the Primera Toma Film Club and the City office on Civic and Cultural Affairs, and the support of many!
Who is Alex Rivera?
Alex Rivera is a New York based digital media artist and filmmaker. He was born in 1973 to a native of Peru and a native of New Jersey. Growing up in a bi-cultural channel surfing tract home led him to rethink some assumptions about race, immigration, identity, and the global economy.
Over the past fifteen years he’s been making work that illuminates two massive and parallel realities: the globalization of information through the internet, and the globalization of families, and communities, through mass migration.
Just before coming to Puerto Peñasco this February, Rivera will be finishing up two days of showing his film at ASU as part of their School of Transborder Studies.
Sleep Dealer is Alex’s first feature-film, and is a sci-fi look at Mexico and possibilities of exporting labor through technology in the future. It was released theatrically in over 30 U.S. cities in 2009.
This is a wonderful opportunity for aspiring filmmakers and the community of Puerto Peñasco to learn more about the creative process of film-making, as well as for Rivera to screen his film here in Mexico. There will be two screenings during this “Day with a Director”, a free morning event at the Schuk Toak Visitors Center with students invited from area schools including the UTPP, ITSPP, Cobach, Cetmar, and UNIDEP. Students will be able to talk with the Director about various themes addressed within the film, as well as the process of filmmaking itself.
On the evening of Feb. 15th, a second screening open to the public will take place at CitiCinemas, beginning with a chance to meet the director at 6 p.m., and the film at 7 p.m. Tickets for the Feb. 15th event are 30 pesos per person and will go on sale at our offices (RockyPoint360) beginning January 30th.

Cineasta Alex Rivera presentará su película Sleep Dealer en Puerto Peñasco ~ 15 de febrero
El ambiente cultural en Puerto Peñasco está creciendo y floreciendo. Hay una gran cantidad de talento en nuestra ciudad, tanto entre la comunidad mexicana como extranjera y por supuesto los que han llevado sus talentos más allá de nuestro puerto. El primer Taller de Cine, organizado el año pasado por el Cine Club Primera Toma, creó una chispa entre mucha gente interesada en las artes, al abrir el mundo de crear cine y acercarse a la séptima arte. Este 15 de febrero, por medio de Rocky Point 360, nos da gusto aumentar esta flama cultural que existe entre los jóvenes en la comunidad al presentar el cineasta Alex Rivera (NY, 1973) quien realizará una presentación de su película Sleep Dealer (2008) aquí en Puerto Peñasco, en un evento abierto al público que se llevará a cabo en CitiCinemas. Este evento no será posible sin el gran entusiasmo del Cine Club Primera Toma y la Dirección de Acción Cívica y Cultural del XXI Ayuntamiento de Puerto Peñasco.
Previo a su llegada a Puerto Peñasco, Alex presentará su película en la Universidad del Estado de Arizona (ASU) por medio de su programa de Estudios Transfronterizos.
La presentación que se hará en Puerto Peñasco es una gran oportunidad para cineastas prometedores así como para la comunidad de aprender más sobre el proceso creativo del séptimo arte, así como para que Rivera presente su película en México. Habrá dos presentaciones durante este “Día con un Director,” la primera en el Centro de Visitantes Schuk Toak de la Reserva de la Biosfera del Pinacate y el Gran Desierto de Altar con invitados especiales de las instituciones educativas ITSPP, UTPP, Cobach, Cetmar y UNIDEP. Los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de hablar con el cineasta referente a diferentes temas que surjan en la película, así como sobre el proceso de hacer cine.
La segunda presentación, abierto al público, tendrá lugar por la tarde del 15 de febrero en CitiCinemas, empezando a las 6 p.m. con la oportunidad de conocer al director y la proyección a las 7 p.m. Cooperación 30 pesos / persona; los boletos estarán disponibles en la oficina de RockyPoint 360 (Plaza Fremont) a partir del 30 de enero.
¿Quién es Alex Rivera?
Alex Rivera es un artista de medios digitales y cineasta nacido en Nueva York en 1973. Siendo su padre inmigrado del Perú y su madre una americana de Nueva Jersey, creció en un hogar bi-cultural que le llevó a replantearse algunas suposiciones acerca de la raza, la inmigración, la identidad y la economía global. Es así como durante los últimos quince años, ha estado contando historias nuevas y visualmente aventuradas sobre latinos.
Su primer largometraje, Sleep Dealer, un film de ciencia-ficción situado en la frontera de los EE.UU. con México, ganó varios premios en el Festival de Cine de Sundance y en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Berlín, se proyectó como parte del “New Directors / New Films ‘en el Museo de Arte Moderno y el Lincoln Center, y tuvo un estreno comercial en los EE.UU., Francia, Japón y otros países alrededor del mundo.
Alex es miembro de Sundance , de Rockefeller, y así como también de la USA Artist. En 2008 fue nombrado por la revista Variety como parte de los “10 Directores que hay que ver” (10 Directors to Watch).”
Sus colaboraciones recientes han incluido el trabajo con Manu Chao, Ana Tijoux y María Hinojosa y ahora vive en Los Angeles, California.
