Even though Mardi Gras has officially come and gone, Puerto Peñasco is readying itself for a carnavalesque fiesta after having pushed “Carnaval” activities to the end of February as a way to once again pick up the historic tradition. The change in dates came after careful consideration of weather conditions in early February, as well as planning time, among other reasons. Renamed ¡Viva Peñasco Fiesta & Cultura!, the festival will take place from Feb. 26th – 28th.
During the planning phase, Puerto Peñasco mayor Ernesto “Kiko” Munro, along with City tourism director Martín Martínez, detailed the “people’s fiesta” will be set up along Calles 12 y 13, which are important roadways toward tourist spots. the goal of the event, furthered the mayor, is to rekindle traditional fiestas that form part of Peñasco’s identity, while strengthening the roots and values of younger generations.
Munro added the festivities will be yet another attraction for visitors, from both Mexico and abroad, who make their way to our seaside spot during what is often considered to be the low season.
The 2016 Viva Peñasco Festival will include daily parades with floats and marching groups, carnival rides, and street theater, along with night concerts at the “main stage” set up near Calle 12. *Costs in pesos*
Following this year’s event, Munro explained, the goal is to set up an independent Carnaval Board so that the tradition can continue regardless of each administration.
