Ahoy! Temporary Import Permits for Sea Vessels

Sea vessels measuring 14.7 ft. (4.5 meters) or more brought across border must obtain temporary permit when crossing into Mexico

Following new provisions of the Secretary of the Treasury, all recreational and sports boats measuring 4.5 meters (14.7” ft.) or more in length (yachts, catamarans, sail boats, etc.) coming into Mexico must follow guidelines regarding temporary importation, which is then valid for 10 years.

Temporary Import Permits for Sea VesselsWith annual hobie cat regattas held twice a year in Puerto Peñasco, as well as the 2016 Hobie 16/18 North American Championship to be held Oct. 10th-14th, it is important to be sure participants are prepared.

Oscar Palacio, President of the Puerto Peñasco Hotel Association, and one of the organizers of the yearly regattas emphasized this point as approximately 150 hobie cats are expected for the North American Championship.

He noted SAT links will be sent to event coordinators in the U.S. to make sure all are in line with the temporary permit guidelines, and in order to prevent issues upon crossing into Mexico.

Where can temporary import permits be acquired?

  • Online at www.banjercito.com.mx
  • At CIITEV offices located at the customs office at border entry points
  • At Mexican Consulates: Phoenix, AZ; Denver, CO; Albuquerque, NM; Sacramento and San Bernardino, CA: Austin, Dallas and Houston, TX; and Chicago, IL.

Requirements

  • Accredit identification with copy of valid official government issued ID
  • Accredit ownership or possession of sea vessel or trailer, as applicable, by providing any of the following documents containing data of vessel (name, brand, model, type, and HIN hull number, registry or certification)
  • Receipt or sales contract, in the name of importer
  • Lading or lease contract in the name of importer, with letter of owner authorizing temporary permit into country of embarkation
  • Ownership title
  • Valid certificate of registry
